Physical Condition: Any activities in the water are strenuous to the body. Moving water presents additional extreme hazards you need to be aware of. Good physical conditioning is necessary to complete the activities required in our programs. Participation is mandatory for completion. If you are not in good physical condition, or are a smoker, you should reconsider your plans to participate in this training. Injuries frequently experienced in this training include, but are not limited to strains, sprains, bruises, lacerations, and occasionally water induced laryngo-spasm. It is strongly recommended that you have adequate health insurance prior to participating in this training. You will be required to sign a standard liability release agreement prior to participating in the practical portions of the class, regardless of employment status or labor affiliation. Student Responsibilities: Students are responsible for providing their own meals, fluids, and specific Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Minimum PPE for water classes are Type III, V, or III-V Personal Floatation Device (PFD), water or climbing helmet, and durable footwear. Contact an instructor a few weeks prior to the class if you have questions regarding PPE. We do have some rental PFDs and helmets available, but quantities are limited. If you need to rent equipment, it is your responsibility to notify the instructors prior to the first day of class. Classes held between mid-June through September typically experience water temperatures that are tolerable without additional thermal protection, but wetsuits, drysuits, or other combinations of water sports gear are advisable to persons prone to hypothermia from immersion or inclement weather conditions. The FAQ page provides additional information on this topic. Class cancellation and relocation: Training programs in the flood/swiftwater rescue discipline are inherently dangerous, even under normal conditions. When water levels are either too high in flooding conditions or too low in drought conditions, Rescue 3 Virginia reserves the right to either relocate the class to an alternate training site, reschedule, or cancel the class for safety reasons. All funds collected in advance will be refunded or applied to another class session within the same calendar year, at the discretion of the student or host agency. We maintain very strict instructor/student safety ratios. It should be noted that all instructors are active members of public safety agencies throughout Virginia and Maryland, and in that capacity are subject to emergency duties or activities that might interfere with participation in training classes during local jurisdictional emergencies. In the event that a class has to be cancelled or reduced in size due to a lack of instructors, refunds or re-scheduled class dates will be offered.
